“yep, got me a 454 big block with duel holley 4 barrel carberateurs, hurst shifter, posse rear, cant keep a dang tire on her for more than 10 mins, 3speed automatic transmission.”

You would be surprised how many cars that have parts of the design date back decades. There is not all that much left of orginal fox set up anyway. Prehaps you missed Ford’s display unit body where they painted unchanged parts one color and the changed ones another.
As far as the soild axle goes, according to product planing the RWD Mustang was supposed to have been killed at least a decade ago. The squarish hatchback (’79-’93) hung on for so long first because of low costs and no desire to retool a car they planned on killing off and second for the last 4 years as they had to keep it because of the strong negative feelings about the car that became the Probe. The Probe was to be launched as Mustang IV.
Now, to the cost issue. The cost of cars like the supra, RX7, etc etc combined with the SUV craze is what killed them. The 1979 RX7 for instance was a simple inexpensive sports car. The Z cars of the 1970s were the same way. As the japanese sports cars were improved they were also moved up market as costs increased. While the last ones were very nice cars they had lost the orginal formula for their sucess and sales suffered. If the mustang and camaro had followed a similar course, they too would be gone now.
One can argue endlessly about which car they prefer, I would like to have an Aston Martin DB7 Vantage myself, however like most people the budget is limited.
