Question: I recently purchased a well equipped 1990 Mitsubishi Eclipse GSX (4 wheel drive model). After giving the dealer the $1000 rebate, my purchase price was $830 below MSRP. What kind of deal did I get on this car?? Are you other Eclipse GSX / Eagle Talon AWD owners willing to share your numbers?
The auto industry is currently in a slump, so you can probably find some really good deals. But the GSX is a different story, at least in Seattle. I made offers at three dealers and they let me walk out. The next day I went back to one of the dealers and made one last offer at the MSRP price (I keep the rebate) they let me walk out. I went to the forth dealer and got the above deal. The availability for this car is really in short supply in Seattle. I called a number of Mitsubishi and Eagle dealers to see who had the car in stock. Most of the dealers did not have any in stock. A couple of dealers said they had only one car arriving with in the next two weeks. Some dealers said they had one or two cars coming in but they were already sold. I thought about waiting until the availability becomes better, but that might take a while. And I don’t know when the next rebate program will start. So I decided to buy now. Whats the supply and demand situation like in other parts of North America for this particular car??

I just saw a turbo supra(89) model with 128 miles advertised for 19K. I pity the person who pays 19K$ for an eclipse of any type. This is not an appropriate comparison. A car with 128 miles is considered used. Not very used, grant you, but used none the less. I wouldn’t be surprised if you could found a model-year-old GSX with 100+ miles for 16-17K.
Don’t get me wrong. I debated between the Supra (non-turbo) and the GS (no X yet) for quite some time, and eventually went with the Supra. I was very happy to come away with the car at $1,000+ under dealer cost, and even then it was just a little under 19K. You won’t come near 19K for a stricly new turbo Supra.
Can’t compare apples with oranges…..
