solar trickle charger
filed in Misc Car Questions
Question: I just had to replace a bettery in one of my car where the battery had no problem whatsoever before, but hasn’t seen much use in about a year or so.
I’d like to avoid this doing too often. So, how good are those solar chargers? What’s their no load output voltage, and how much current can they provide?
Answer: If the car is sitting for a week or so at a time between drives, then it might be worthwhile if you’re located somewhere where you get sun consistantly this time of year..
The small size of these panels generate very little in the way of amperage (Milliamps, actually) and are only effective over long periods of time to “maintain” a battery that’s in good health to begin.. They won’t charge, or even maintain, a battery that’s on it’s last legs to begin with.
For anything less then 72 hours at a time though, I wouldn’t even bother.
