Mustang-Cobra & Indy models

Question: Was down at the local Ford dealership today checking out the new Mustangs. While talking to the Sales mgr., he informed me that Ford is going to release a LIMITED EDITION Mustang COBRA about the same time as the Mustang INDY PACE Car edition around Apr. 94. He didn’t know what kind of engine was going to be in the Cobra, but that he heard it was to have a beefed up suspension and other hi performance modifications. He said, he’ll have more info on it when he returns from Phoenix, AZ.; where FORD is suppose to display a model of the Mustang Cobra to national Ford sales/service mgrs. Has anyone else heard news of this Mustang Cobra?

Answer: Regarding your posting about the upcoming Mustang, don’t expect anything too spectacular. First of all, yes, the 1994 Mustang has a lot of features, or rather components that help it handle better than the old 93 LX or GT. Having said that, the front K-Member has been moved forward 1/2 inch. This is a significant modification for increased road holding. Rim diameter has been upgraded for 94, with the addition of 17 inch alloy wheels, from the 16 inch on the GT and 15’s on the LX in 1993. Power is the same, unfortunately.
Now, for the good news. The 1994 Cobra is going to have a 245 (or there abouts) GT-40 Engine, residing in the engine bay. It will NOT be a FULL GT-40 Motor. It will not, at least from what I heard, have the SVO 4-bolt main, but will still have the standard 2-main. Cylinder heads will be upgraded slightly, but again, I don’t think it will be the full fledge GT-40, large vavled heads. And of course, it will be getting the GT-40 upper and lower intake manifolds, accompanied with the Motorsport HI-Flow fuel pump. In addition to that, i believe that it will be getting an X-303 camshaft or an E303. In any case, it will be producing someone figures in the 240 – 250 horsepower. Not all that impressive, but a start. Plus, with the new Mustang, being it;s the same powerplant, essentially, all the traditional bolt-ons can still fit. For example, heads, intakes, throttle bodies, pullies, exhaust, etc. EVERYTHING.
Anyway, hope this helped. If you would not consider a car like this because of ABS, then you shouldn’t be in the market for this type of car. Someone who can handle 375hp in a pony car is not concerned with ABS. They probably already know how to brake without the aid of a computer. If you are driving a 375hp/300+ lb of torque car in the snow, you better be a damn good driver, ABS or not.
Sorry, I just find it very frustrating to see cars have to compete with things like ABS and airbags, in a car like the Mustang it just helps raise the cost, and given the choice, I would rather do without ABS, airbags, FWD (yech) and whatever the next thing the marketers are going to tell us we really need. (Heads up display?)
