Carburetion Problem 318 Dodge
filed in Misc Car Questions
Question: Heeelllp! Had a wrecking yard replace an engine on a 77 dodge van. They put on the wrong carb. Engine had a flat spot with on acceleration and will stall when cold. Mechanic says its either the wrong carb, or choke or that the intake manifold is gooped up and can`t get exhaust gases to warm the choke.
My questions are:
1) How do you determine the correct carb for that engine.
2) does the electric choke infleunce carb operation even after the engine warms up?
3) how do I determine if its the carb or the intake manifold gooped up?
The flat spot or stumble occurs even after slight engine warm up, but is more pronounced when the engine is cold and occurs at about 1/3 throttle. Accelerator pump appears to be operating ok.
Any help is certainly most appreciated. Thank you.
Answer: I have a 1973 Charger with a 318 in it. It did the same thing your is doing. I had the garage put a rebuilt carb. in it and it still did the same thing. So put another on still the same. Bought a NEW carb. and everything is fine now. The mechanic said that the rebuilt carbs tend to have warped accelerator pump holes that causes this. So you might try a new carb instead of a rebuilt. It was about $25 more for a new one.
