Question: I’ve got a 68 Polara, project car. It’s just sitting in my garage, and even though I’d start it up every few days, I couldn’t drive it (not licensed). So finally the battery went dead. I replaced the battery with a new one, but it still won’t start. The engine turns over but very slowly, just like the batt. is on its last legs–but this is a brand new one. So I put the charger on it for several hours and the meter on the charger showed it to be fully charged, but same think. Rrrrr Rrrr R…..nothing. Could I have gotten a dud of a new battery? Or what else might be the problem? Really appreciate your help….

Answer: I’d guess the connection at the batter posts, or too the starter, are corroded. It only takes a little corrosion to reduce the current available to the starter. This is particularly true if the car is 30 years old!
Starters draw VERY high current when engaged. In fact, it would probably be prudent to replace the battery connections and the high current lead to the starter.
Pick up a ballast resistor while your at the automart and throw it in the glove box. 8-D
