Honda Civic – Recall for Bad Ignition Part: Model Year: 1988-91
filed in 1991 Honda Civic
Question: I am posting this for the benefit of those who may not be aware of the following announcement from Honda.
“Several months ago, we announced a Product Update involving all 1988-1991 Civics. If the igniter, a part in the ignition system, should fail, your car will not start. Your Honda dealer will replace the igniter with an improved part.
…….This will be done free of charge. For any further info. please call 1-800-999-1009.”
I was not aware of this until I received a postcard in the mail with this notice. Anyway, if you own a Civic that is of 1988-1991 model year, bring it to the Honda dealer and have the part changed.
Answer: Furthermore, if you have allready had the ignitor in your Civic changed before you receive the notice in the mail, Honda will reimburse you if you send them a copy of your bill. Refer to the mailer or call the 800 number above. This is what happened to me, and they even paid me back for the towing. Your car does not need to have been under warantee at the time the work was done.
There was also a similar recall for Honda Accords, 1990-91. This involved the distributor assembly and several sensors that would go out at the same time, killing your engine. We received notifaction from Honda on this and before we could get the car into the dealership to have it fixed– it died on the interstate! Well we had a towing service tow it to a Honda dealership and that was indeed the problem– they fixed it free of charge of course, and we filled out the reimbursment form for the towing and they sent us check to cover the costs. The reimbursment was good for whomever owned the car, not just the original owner– we bought our 1990 used in 1992. I had my 91 CRX-Si repaired August last year, 90k miles at that time, because the igniter was dead. At that time Honda had not announce the recall yet. I only found out becuase I was at the dealership getting a igniter to replace the dead one. I had to tow my car into the dealer because they would not want me to replace the igniter myself. I got the free repair but the dealer (Airport Honda, LA) would not give me the $50 dollar towing fee. I had to write to Honda USA to get my money. Anyway I got all this settled and then couple month later they send me this postcard. Yeah right, kind of late aren’t they. By the way, (maybe I’m late with this) there is another recall involving Honda Civics and Acura Intergras. Don’t remember what it is for, but it is in the latest issue of Automotive News. Are you interested, or do you already know about it?
