Question: Whatever it really means, I do know that the ‘R’ stands for ‘reliability’. My :dad’s ‘83 Ranger has never failed to start, ever. It has 146k original miles on :the 2.0L 4-banger, and the oil mileage is still pretty good. The only things he :has ever had to replace are the clutch, tires, turn signal switch (yesterday), :and the timing belt. All the other belts are original! Any ‘83 Toyota owners :o ut there with the original belts?

Answer: I had an ‘84 Ranger that had around 135,000 miles on it when it finally expired. It’s engine ate oil, no smoke. The engine block would get so hot that if I spilled oil on the block, as I did a few times, I had to sprinkle soap on it to douse the fire. It did bring me home, from Panama City, Florida to Alhambra, Called with no problems and in less than 46 hours or so. It is also a major player in why I got my Mustang. When the heater core blew I bought the Mustang instead of replacing the core…damn glad I did. Even today!! :)
A friend with full knowledge of the truck’s history, how could I not disclose this to someone I worked with, bought the Ranger from me after the heater core blew out. After repairs, it was soon back on the road, only to be taken out Caliland shortly after that. A fire fueled by vapors from the duel tanks made short work of the Ranger.
His loss and I was up a $1000.00 too boot. :)
