1994+ Mustang GT: How do you rate this car?
filed in Ford Mustang
Question: I don’t want this thread to turn into a debate of what car is faster, etc. I want to know opinions from owners of the 1994-present Mustang GT. I am considering this car as a replacement to a very problematic Probe GT I own currently. I love the Mustang and have followed it for years. I have finally put enough insurance money aside
to own one.
Thanks for any input you can offer!
Answer: The two cars that you are comparing are of significantly different breeds. The Probe GT is a “quick” nimble feeling car that accelerates well, but wont really put you in the Macho category. It handles very well and has an overall easy to drive feeling. The multi-valve six provides “japanese” like performance and feel. If you have a 5 speed, you’ve enjoyed relatively smooth, short shifts and light clutch effort. To sum things up, its cute, light, nimble and fun to drive. Its not rear wheel drive, solid rear axle, toruqe making V-8 machoness. That’s where the mustang tries to go. Immediately you’ll notice the Mustang feels much bigger, requires more effort to navigate through the 5 speed with significantly harder clutch effort. However, you will be rewarded with lots of low-end torque. The car is heavier and in my opinion, doesn’t hadle as easily as the Probe. The 94+ mustang does handle much better than the previous generation due largely to greater torsional stiffness. Power comes from the tride and true 5.0l V8(about 215hp on GT). The decision lies in what type of ride you’re looking for. If you want this “Macho torque madness” then I would have to recommend to you the Chevy Comaro. This is a superior car to the mustang on all fronts. It handles better, is lighter, and has more horsepower in the 350 version, and is basically more car for the money. You can also get the 6 speed trans version. I have driven all 3 of these cars and the comaro is the really a fun car. Everything is there, including the deep growl of the engine on accel. Stats are 275+ hp on the Z version. GM did there homework on this one. They also offer, new for this year I think, the 3.8L v-6 option which develops 200hp (close to the stang) and will keep your insurance WAY down. Haven’t had a chance to drive that one yet, but I know that the 3.8 is one of GMs best motors. Hope this provides food for thought. I totally agree. Except all buyers will have to take reliability track record into account. The Camaro/Firebird scored absolute lowest in a Consumer Reports issue in overall reliability. A smart shopper will look beyond the max hp rating on the stock vehicle when making the final decision. There is also the matter of looks. Based on the fact that Ford sells 2x as many Stangs as Camaros, I’d say most people like the SN-95 Mustang design better. But this obviously varies from person-to-person. I like both designs well enough.
