Question: I’m looking at buying a 1969 1/2 Mustang Fastback, but I don’t have the VIN codes for this year to decode the engine type…
The VIN is 0F05H10783, and the guy says it’s a 351, but doesn’t say if it’s a Cleveland or Windsor. It’s not all THAT important, since I’m only going to drive this engine until I can get a Boss 429 and the tools necessary to modify the shock towers.
So what kind is it?

Answer: Don’t know what the 1/2 stands for but if the engine is factory it is a Windsor as the Cleveland was not available until ‘70. Count the bolts on the valve cover. If it has six then it’s a Windsor. Also if the thermostat goes into the intake manifold rather than the block then it’s a Windsor. There are other ways to tell but those are the easiest. BTW I hope you are ready for some major shock tower massaging when you put the Shotgun motor in. Boss 429 Mustangs have completely different engine bays to fit these monsters. Good Luck! StuK
