Question: 1996 ford f150. hard to handle on the freeway at times. Could it be the  camper shell??

Answer: How high and wide is it? More than 18 or so inches  higher than the cab (especially the flat front models)  and you run into aerodynamic problems at freeway  speeds. In high or even moderate crosswinds with  a light load or high centered load can make a routine  ride very interesting to say the least. Taller or lifted  4X4’s can exaggerate the problem. A friend of mine  gave it up years ago in favor of a trailer and having  driven his “rig” before the trailer I can tell you it could  get exciting? Is that the polite way to put it?  If it’s a cab high. Then it shouldn’t unless it’s overloaded.  Otherwise I don’t see how it would. I have a cap on mine  and I think it actually improved the higher speed handling.  Especially with a moderate load.
