Answer: check the wiring from the speed sensor on the rear differential
it has a connector right at the sensor, and probably another one about 2-3 feet up the wire on the frame rail
take ‘em apart and look for corrosion, clean it if it’s there
also pull GENTLY on the wires, sometime it will corrode almost in two INSIDE the insulation with no outward signs
also you might want to take the sensor out of the diff and check for metal particles clinging to it…….be careful, the bolt is prone to corrodong and seizing up and it you twist it off you are screwed, blued, tatto-ed and shove in a barrel, as they say
soak it down with PB Blaster the night before
another thing that causes this, with no codes, is the MLPS (Manual Lever Position Switch), located surrounding the shift lever on the outside of the transmission, giving the ECM a false indication what gear it’s in……if the MLPS tells the ECM the lever is in ‘1′, it won’t shift (a good indication that this is the problem is that you have engine braking, when you let off the gas, where you normally wouldn’t)
every time the weather turns rainy for 3-4 days, I get Tauruses, Sables, and Windstars that are shuttle shifting 4-3-4-3-4 caused by moisture in the MLPS
