1988-90 F-150 Paint Recall
filed in 1993 Ford F150
Question: Doe’s any one have any information on the recall that was done to serveral F-150’s in the years of 1988 – 1990 I’m not sure if that is the exact year but I believe my truck falls in the dates that they used some bad paint as the truck ( ‘90 F-150 with 56K original miles) paint is peeling. I’ve heard about several of my friends getting their trucks repainted and want to know if it might apply to mine? I’m second owner as far as I know.
Answer: I do not have the recall number anymore either but just as a bit of information. My 1991 (which I just sold last summer)was included in that paint recall problem. Unfortunatley, I was told by Ford (Detroit) and my local dealers that I waited too long to have the truck repainted and that they would not give me a cent toward a new paint job. This was in 1997 when I made the calls. I was told that if I called when the recall was in full-swing (i think that was in 1994/1995) that I would have been ok but since I waited till 1997, they were not going to do anything. I was really ticked off and ended up having to get the truck painted out of my own pocket. Thanks Ford. Because I used my truck as a “show” truck at the beginning of it’s life, (always washed, polished and garaged) my paint probably lasted a bit longer then the average Ford truck. So, because I took care of my truck and it took longer for the paint to fall off, I now had to pay myself for a error that Ford admitted. At that point, I swore never to buy another Ford truck. Good luck in trying to get Ford to paint it though. It shouldn’t be easy. Ford still has touble making ’sticky’ paint. My black ‘95 F150 is peeling in a few spots at the bottom of the door, on the tailgate and under the hood. It also has rust on the front bumper which has been there almost since new. When I talked to the dealership the salesman said it shouldn’t be a problem, but the body shop manager said he wouldn’t replace the bumper since there was no recall and the truck was now out of warranty (5,000 miles). After several tries and some nasty words about his mother (and his questionable ancestory in general) I gave up. Now I have a friend working at a different dealership he is trying to find out what can be done.
I will have to ask him what the scoop is on the earlier paint problem. I’ll let you know if I find out anything useful.
