Ford F150 Posi-Trac
filed in 1986 Ford F150
Question: I have an 1986 f150… where would I confirm that it is fitted with the Posi-trac rear end???
Answer: Check the axle ID codes on the door post with the dealer, or jack it up with both wheels off the ground and the transmission in neutral. Turn one wheel by hand. If the wheel on the other side turns the opposite way, it is an open differential. If it turns in the same direction, along with the driveshaft, it is a traction lock differential.
Check your line tag or vin number. It may be a mute point though, the ears on the clutch discs in the rear end break off and there is no more Posi-trac. Try jacking the rear end up, if both wheel go the same way when you hand turn the wheels, it is usually Posi You could also check check the Axle Identification Tag which should be attached to one of the bolts. You may see a 4 digit code with possible “3L08″ which means the axle is a 3.08 ratio with Traction-Lok. If no tag is there, just pull the cover and look for a pair of clutch packs in the rearend. You can buy replacement packs from the dealer. This clutches do wear out, but they are easily replaced.
