4.9L V8 or V6 F150?
filed in 1979 Ford F150
Question:
An acquaintance of mine insists that there is a 4.9L V8 in a 1979 Ford F150 truck. The only information I can find only talks about a 4.9L V6. Can someone either confirm or not the V8 4.9L or point me to a web site that would contain the information about late 1970’s ford trucks. I am also looking for towing capacity, etc.
Answer:
The venerable 5.0 V8 is actually 4.9 and change in displacement.
These engines were installed until the new 98 body style, into which the new “modular” engines have been placed.
I thought the current ones were 4.2 V6, 4.6 V8 and 5.4 V8 in the F150’s. I know the V8 in my 00 is a 5.4, and buddies 97 is a 4.6l. Excuse me if you were referring to earlier years as I saw the “currently” part and was curious as to what other engines there were 5.2L? I didn’t know they started putting Mopar 318s into Fords. Not even sure where to find a 4.8L v8…
There’s a 4.2L V6, a 4.6L V8, and a 5.4L v8 for the new F-150s. Prior to the ‘97 remodel it was the 4.9L I6 or 5.0L v8 (Carpoint calls it a 4.9L, but it’s 302ci and Ford calls it a 5.0)
This is a running joke with Car and Driver. They refused to call the 302 a 5.0L in the mustang 5.0. They called it a 4.9 because if you follow the rounding rules it rounds DOWN to 4.9, not UP to 5.0L. Used to drive the mustang owner’s crazy! They thought that just because it said 5.0L on the side of the car that it must be a 5.0!
When the new body style went into production in 1996 until present the following engine displacements have been used:
1. 4.2L V6 (pushrod engine, derivative of the 3.8L V6 utilized in the Taurus and Windstar)
2. 4.6L V8 (OHC … two variants, one manufactured in Windsor, one in Romeo … both have been used in F-150s.
3. 5.4L V8 (OHC, all manufactured in Windsor)
The older body styles utilized the following engines:
1. 4.9L I-6 (300 CI) (pushrod engine, virtually indestructible, utilized in F-series pickups from 1975 to 1996 (old body style only) … upgraded to fuel injection in 1987 … manufactured in Cleveland
2. 5.0L V8 (technically a 4.9L engine … 302 CI pushrod engine) … utilized in F-series pickups from 1969 to 1974 and from 1979 to 1996 (old body style only) upgraded to fuel injection in 1986 … manufactured in Cleveland
3. 5.8L V8 (351 CI pushrod engine) … 351W manufactured in Windsor and utilized from 1975 to 1996 (old body style only) … upgraded to fuel injection in 1987 … 351M was used in some 1977 to 1979 trucks (manufactured in Cleveland?)
