Question:

Has anyone installed a T5 or any other 5 speed with an Overdrive in a 85 or a 1980’s series Corvette?

Answer:

I think Ecklers has a Doug Nash 5 speed and all the things you’ll need to stuff a 5 speed in (bell housing, clutch, shifter, bearings, etc). I’ve toyed with the idea for my 69′ Vette. True, the Doug Nash is available thru Ecklers, and others, but, it is not an overdrive.  5th is 1:1 in the DNE (Richmond now…).  Similar to an overdrive if you run an economy rear end ratio (like a 2.73 or lower numerical).

My 84 with 3.36 and DNE5 turns 2600 plus at 60 mph…  The DNE has a 3.27 first, which gives 4.11 or 4.56 type off-the-line gearing with 2.73 – 3.36 rear gears… I have, yes, but did not think to offer up that option to the original poster, probably due to my own rejection of it on cost and other reasons…(present engine unhappy under 2000 rpm, so OD is out for me right now…)

Richmond also has a six with OD (pretty much my DNE plus the OD sixth), but it is very expensive (2700.00 plus).  Too rich for my blood, and I’d need to de-tune a bit to run it anyway…

I have seen an article by Hib Halverson who freelance writes for Corvette Fever I think.  He has an early 70s big block that he has had a six speed put in.  He wrote at least one article, with the promise of more to come.  He can be found haunting the VetteNet mailing list, and maybe the articles via a net search…

Many of the new Camarabirds are running 6spds now too.  I forget whose tranny they are using, and whether or not the fit is acceptable.  Hib had some mods required to fit whatever trans he installed…
