Hottest-looking car of all time?
filed in 1957 Chevy Corvette
Question:
Prior to a couple of months ago, the all-time favorite designwould have gone to Ferrari’s 308GTS. However, after seeing, and reading about, the TVR Griffith in June’s Performance CAR, the 308 will have to settle for second. Why? The early Ferraris were just plain beautiful. Lean, flowing, and sensuous, sort of what the Jaguar E-Type might have been if the dough had been allowed to rise a bit more before it got tossed into the oven. The 288 GTO was prettier and faster-looking than the other 308-derived models. As for the 348, the rear-quarter view isn’t as good as it could be, but you only see that for a couple of seconds on the highway. The 512 TR is just a Testarossa with some detail polishing, plus the 18-inch wheels show off the brakes(lovely on their own) almost as well as no wheels at all. The Miura is probably the only Lamborghini that looks better than its Ferrari contemporary. The E-Type is just an underleavened 250 Testa Rossa, and the XJ220 is the best-looking thing from Coventry since the E died. The two M-B’s are about as Italian as any German cars look, and that’s wonderful with a good Italian designer. The M6 is the only one of the lot I’ve been able to see close-up at rest, and is just plain nice. So is the Corvette. I like the looks of the 289 Cobra over the 427 because it looks just a wee bit nimbler, which is only proper, since it won Shelby the What’s-Its-Name international road racing championship. I’d go for Boyd Coddington’s new yellow car he built in conjunction with Mitsubishi (it was featured in Auto Week recently)
but, then you used the verbage “Hottest-looking car of all time”
were you being literal??
IMHO – the hottest car is up to the owner, but you can’t beat ‘34 roadster, except with a ‘34 cabriolet or ‘34 Vicky
or a ‘34 sedan delivery….. then again, there’s the buick: ‘46-’47 sedanette, 55-57 roadmaster, etc
